I just wanted to update everyone to let you all know that Zoë has surgery scheduled for July 1st. We have consulted different doctors, and agree with our local pediatric orthopedist that the best course is to amputate the "feet" Zoë has and fuse the tibia and fibulas together to form a good stump for below-the-knee prostheses. How exciting, but do keep all this in prayer. It is at least a six hour operation and this is the first time her doctor will be doing this particular type of case. Please pray that God would give him abundant wisdom, as it is actually quite a bit more complicated than the simplistic way I explained it just now, and he will have to make some decisions about what exactly is best, and some of those will be right during the operation. I think Josh said she should be hospitalized after that for about four days. Then she will have casts on her legs for 6 weeks.

sorry i am behind in checking my favorite blogs...
my family thinks of your sweet children often.
i was just thinking about her yesterday when i heard a news story on npr about an athelete that will be allowed to participate in the upcoming olympics. his legs were amputated below the knees when he was a baby and runs using prostheses, amazing, he's so fast that at first he wasn't allowed because they thought he may have advantage! please keep updating your blog so we know how you are all doing.
best regards,
rachel
